I completely lack the ability to be objective about this book Simply brilliant.

Very well written, cohesive and always to a high level of skill throughout the collection There was one typo that I found, and the cover was decent enough However, I didn t read one or two stories for the excessive pointless swearing, and got a bit sick of the constant drugs and sex it would have been good to see a variety, to make the use of shock detail to resonate further Most of the stories were reprints though, so singularly they would have had the desired impact.

Along the speculative fiction spectrum, horror is probably my least visited corner of the continuum However, The Last Days of Kali Yuga is about as far from splatter punk and evil killer clowns as you can probably get While supernatural entities do abound, often than not the stories are about those nastiest of monsters people The language is raw, visceral and genuinely disturbing It was an excellent read.
First for some general comments Whe à The Last Days of Kali Yuga РA disturbing, dark, funny and poignant collection of Haines unique brand of horror fiction, including one new story, The Past is a Bridge Best Left Burnt , which is just stunning I love this collection so much Highly, highly recommended.
read this awhile back and really liked it picked it up again to do a belated review and came to the conclusion that I love it This is Paul Haines s last collection he died of cancer this past March Such a shame to lose an author that had so much talent, and so much skill at writing gut punching horror for adults I m now reading another, earlier collection, Doorways for the Dispossessed I ll review them both in detail at Review to follow at Hellnotes sometime soon Some of these stories are just amazing They are so good that they make 4 5 of these seem very pedestrian.
Skin crawlingly good horror Paul Haines s monsters are those within the human psyche His ability to gently tease out the ugliest, most evil thoughts and deeds of mundane humanity is genius, tinged as it is with vulnerability and the sheer believability of our worst selves Wives is rightly viewed as a work of art, with the revelations unfolding towards the end only partially guessed at.
This collection, complete with an author s word after each story, won t be for everyone It s uncomfortable, unsettling reading and much of the horror is too close to the everyday human experience to ignore But it s that discomfort and too close to home understanding of human weakness, pettiness, cruelt and selfishness that make the stories so very, very effective.
The Last Days of Kali Yuga plunges the reader into a dark world of sex, drugs, drugs, violence, and disillusionment From the Himalayas to Adelaide, and from Melbourne to the author s home in New Zealand, Haines introduces us to a host of nasty and confused characters The writing style is blunt and the dialogue aggressive and brutal Most of the stories make it clear where the reader is being taken but drag him there all the same They are worlds drenched in violence and self loathing Other tales were surprising, sophisticated, and subtle in comparison The latter description fits my favourite story by far, Her Collection of Intimacy I had read this tale previously in a horror anthology and it had stood out It is an excellent work of fiction, a twisted tale of love, g
